PETRI NIENABER
Tour Leader
I am a wildlife photography luminary with 17 years of experience behind the lens. My career in photography spans the captivating terrains of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Zambia.
My photography journey commenced in 2006 with a Canon 40D and a range of Sigma lenses. I started in the spirited realm of sports photography, capturing the dynamic essence of rugby, athletics, trail running, and mountain biking. I served as the official photographer for the Pumas Rugby team from 2007 to 2011, documenting their journey with unparalleled passion and skill.
However, my profound connection with nature traces back to my formative years, deeply influenced by my parents’ enduring love for the outdoors. They cultivated my fascination with nature and birding by embarking on explorations across Southern Africa as a family. These journeys ignited a lifelong passion for the natural world, shaping my reverence for wildlife and its habitats. This early exposure laid the groundwork for my transition from sports to wildlife photography. My intimate understanding of animal behaviour, honed through years of observation and a genuine love for nature, is the cornerstone of my remarkable imagery.
With an innate understanding of Africa’s wildlife’s intricate ecosystems and behavioural intricacies, my photographic journey is an odyssey through the heart of these magnificent destinations. From the expansive savannas of South Africa to the teeming waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, from the hauntingly beautiful deserts of Namibia to the lush biodiversity of Zimbabwe’s national parks, my photographs narrate stories of resilience, beauty, and survival.
Throughout my career, I have honed my craft to capture fleeting moments that reveal the soul of Africa’s wildlife. My images encapsulate the power of elephants, the grace of big cats, the vibrancy of birdlife, and the enigmatic presence of Africa’s lesser-known species. I paint a living portrait of the continent’s rich and diverse fauna through my lens. As an innovator, my expertise extends to camera trapping, a specialised technique that allows me to capture elusive animals in their natural habitats. This unique skill unveiled the hidden lives of creatures rarely witnessed, contributing to my portfolio with moments of extraordinary rarity and intimacy.
My imagery has graced the pages of numerous international publications, captivating audiences worldwide. My photographs, characterised by their vibrant depth and authenticity, have received local and international recognition for their compelling narratives and visual brilliance. Beyond my artistic endeavours, I am an unwavering advocate for wildlife conservation. My images serve as compelling reminders of the delicate balance within these ecosystems, inspiring viewers to cherish and safeguard Africa’s invaluable natural heritage.
My journey, fuelled by my deep-rooted love for nature, is a testament to my unwavering dedication, expertise, and profound connection with the natural world. My photography captures moments frozen in time and narrates stories that evoke emotions, inspire conservation, and foster a deeper appreciation for the majestic wonders of Africa’s wildlife.
